Explore Sichuan Nature

Dec. 13, 2024 / Asia+ China+ Sichuan

There’s no doubt about it, Sichuan province is one of our favourite regions of China. It has everything – beautiful nature, city life in Chengdu and laid back, beachy vibes (sans beach). If you’re planning to visit Chengdu, why not make it a trip and explore some other parts of Sichuan too? Here’s out top recommendations.

Nature in Northern Sichuan

Jiazhaigou Valley

The jewels of the Sichuan province are Jiuzhaigou Valley (九寨沟, jiǔ zhài gōu) and Huanglong (黄龙, huáng lóng). Jiuzhaigou Valley is renowned for its crystal-clear lakes, cascading waterfalls, and colorful forests. The park’s diverse ecosystem creates breathtaking scenery, with vibrant hues reflecting off the water’s surface. Hiking trails wind through the valley, offering opportunities to witness the park’s natural beauty up close.

Huanglong

Huanglong is famous for its colourful travertine pools, which resemble a dragon’s scales cascading down the mountainside. The park’s pristine waters, snow-capped peaks, and lush forests create a truly magical landscape. Visitors can hike along the scenic trails, soak in the natural hot springs, and admire the stunning views.

Nature in Northwest Sichuan

Get off the beaten track and explore Siguniangshan or Four Sisters Mountains (四姑娘山, sì gū niáng shān). Known for its diverse landscapes, including snow-capped peaks, alpine meadows, and dense forests, Siguniangshan is a popular destination for hikers and nature lovers. The area offers a range of trails, from easy day hikes to challenging multi-day treks. Visitors can also enjoy hot spring baths, local Tibetan culture, and breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains.

Nature in Western Sichuan

Garze Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture (甘孜, gān zī). Garze boasts stunning natural beauty and rich Tibetan culture. This mountainous area offers a diverse range of landscapes, from snow-capped peaks to crystal-clear lakes. Visitors can explore ancient monasteries, hike through pristine forests, and witness traditional Tibetan customs. Don’t miss the opportunity to visit the holy mountain of Yakang and the picturesque Litang County.

Nature in Southwest Sichuan

Lugu Lake (泸沽湖, lù gǔ hú) on the border of Sichuan and Yunnan provinces, is a stunning high-altitude lake surrounded by majestic mountains. Known for its stunning natural beauty and unique Mosuo culture, the lake offers opportunities for bike riding, boating, and exploring the surrounding villages. Check out our blog post on Lugu Lake!
