Are you planning a Guangzhou day trip to see the best of the city in one day? This route takes you through the historic heart of the city before ending at the modern skyline. First, you will visit Sacred Heart Cathedral and the European streets of Shamian Island. Afterward, you can explore the cultural hub of Yongqing Lane. You will also see the ancient ruins of Beijing Road and the glowing Dafo Temple before catching the night view of the Canton Tower.
We lived in Guangzhou for eight months as English teachers. During that time, we lived a normal life in the Jiangnanxi neighborhood. We spent most of our days at the gym or in expat bars. Unfortunately, we realized too late that we had ignored the history and landmarks. This itinerary is based on what we finally saw when we stopped being busy. Therefore, it contains everything you need to understand the city.
China has excellent public transport. Use Apple Maps to find your way because it tells you exactly which metro exit to use. Do not ignore this advice. Since Guangzhou stations are massive, the wrong exit leads to a long walk in the humid heat. Sacred Heart Cathedral
Sacred Heart Cathedral is a Gothic-style stone church built from granite. It sits in the old Yuexiu district. Even though we lived near here for months, we walked past the entrance several times without noticing it. As a result, it is a quiet find.
Next, walk through the Yide Road Dried Seafood Market nearby. You can see traditional Cantonese ingredients there. Onelink International Plaza is also close. It has floors of toys and electronics. For instance, we found high-quality drones there for a fraction of the price of big brands.
- Address: 56 Yide Road, Yuexiu District
- Metro: Line 2 to Haizhu Square Station, Exit B1. Walk west for 10 minutes.
- Food: Try the ginger milk curd nearby for 15 RMB. Use a QR code to order. The milk turns into pudding in three minutes. Avoid the extra spicy version.
Shamian Island
Shamian Island was an English and French concession. It has European architecture and quiet streets. Usually, we came here when we needed a break from the noise. For this reason, the area feels different from the rest of the city. Walk along the Pearl River and check out the jewelry shops.
- Address: Shamian North Street, Liwan District
- Metro: Line 1 or 6 to Huangsha Station, Exit E. Cross the pedestrian bridge.
- Cafe Fleur: This cafe is in a European building. It is very quiet. The coffee and snack board costs 88 RMB.
- Detour: Visit the Qingping Aquatic Pets Market nearby to see exotic fish.
Yongqing Lane and Bruce Lee’s Ancestral Home
Yongqing Lane is a cultural district with traditional architecture. You can see the Moon Bridge and the Cantonese Opera Art Museum here. In addition, find the floral wall for a photo. Walk to Lychee Bay to see traditional canals and stone bridges.
- Address: 99 Enning Road, Liwan District
- Metro: Walk north from Shamian Island.
- Bruce Lee’s House: The house features traditional brickwork. Note that the stairs are very steep.
- Food: Try Tingzai Porridge for 19 RMB.
- Power Banks: Use the rental stations in the shops. It costs 3 RMB per hour. This changed how we traveled because we stopped worrying about battery life.
Shopping at Shangxiajiu and Xihua Road
Shangxiajiu is a pedestrian street for cheap clothes and local brands. You can even get your ears cleaned here for 78 RMB. This is a unique local experience. Also, visit Hualin Temple nearby to see the 500 golden statues in the Hall of Arhats. This reminds us of the ancient charm we found in Lijiang.
- Address: Shangxiajiu Pedestrian Street
- Metro: Line 1 to Changshou Road Station.
- Xihua Road: Visit this area for local snacks away from the tourist crowds.
Dafo Temple and Beijing Road
Beijing Road was a major highlight of our time in the city. Your Guangzhou day trip should center on the pet cafe on the second floor of a building overlooking the street. For 58 RMB, you can play with Shiba Inus and cats while watching the crowds below. Because of this location, the view of the massive Dafo Temple is the best in the area.
Beijing Road also features ancient road ruins preserved under glass panels on the ground. Consequently, you can walk over history while shopping. The Nanyue Kingdom Palace Museum is also nearby. It shows ruins of an ancient royal palace.
- Address: 21 Huixin Middle Street, Yuexiu District
- Metro: Line 6 to Beijing Road Station.
- Dafo Temple: Entry is free. It looks best after 7:00 PM when the gold lights turn on.
- Dog Cafe: Entry is 58 RMB. It is the perfect place to rest while overlooking the temple.
The Best View of the Canton Tower
The Canton Tower is the most famous landmark. We waited until the end of our eight months to visit, which was a mistake. So, seeing the tower at night is essential. Walk through Flower City Square to see the library and opera house. This square offers the best skyline views.

- Photos: Professional photographers charge 10 RMB per photo. They send the files directly to your phone.
- Parc Central: This mall usually has massive art displays that are great for photos.
