It offers a wilder alternative to China’s often perfectly maintained tourist trails like Zhangjiajie National Forest Park. Specifically, Sanya’s Baishi Ridge winds through coconut plantations and rice terraces. This provides an authentic experience for nature lovers. Actually, for us, this was one of our two favourite hikes on the island.

How to get to Baishi Ridge Sanya: Transport and Logistics
To get to Baishi Ridge in Sanya, you must navigate to Jiayou Village (加油村) near Baoting. There is no direct public transport from Sanya or Houhai Bay. Consequently, hiring a private driver for the day is the most reliable method to reach the trailhead and secure parking in the village.
Since we’re more of the “figure it out as we go” type, we ended up booking a driver at the absolute last minute. It was 8:00 PM the night before when we finally asked the hotel staff for a lead, and by the time we got back from dinner, they’d pulled through with a contact. We shot him a message right away to set up a 7:00 AM pickup from the Houhai Village entrance. All up, the day rate was 500 CNY (69 USD).
The next morning, we loaded up with six veggie and meat bao for 3 CNY (0.40 USD) each, which was the perfect breakfast for a day on the trail. The drive from Sanya takes about two hours in a comfortable electric sedan. Even in the winter, the Hainan sun is no joke so it’s definitely worth heading out early just to beat that midday heat.

Finding the Baishi Ridge Trailhead in Jiayou Village
To find the Baishi Ridge trailhead, navigate to Jiayou Village (加油村) and follow the cement road for 30 minutes past the village entrance rock. Look for the rice terraces and a right-hand fork that leads to a dead-end parking field. A small, makeshift sign marks the start of the hiking path.
You likely won’t find the trail on Amap (高德地图) because the village is small and remote. For this reason, we took screenshots of Rednote instructions on how to reach the trailhead beforehand. This ensured we did not get lost if we lost signal. After that, it took another 30 minutes by car to reach the trailhead from the village entrance rock. If you are used to the efficiency of the High Speed Train in China, this rustic navigation is a major change.
The road leads deep into rice terraces and through dirt roads. Halfway through, our driver seriously doubted the directions, but a local confirmed we were on the right path. Eventually, the road ended at a field used for parking and a makeshift sign marked the start of the trail.

Terraced fields along the lower sections of the hike showcase local agricultural practices in Hainan. Driving through the palm-lined roads of Sanya is the best way to reach the remote Baishiling trailheads. Finding a spot to park near the base of the mountain before starting the steep ascent. Keep an eye out for local markers and red arrows to stay on the correct path up the ridge.
Baishi Ridge Hiking Difficulty and Safety Guide
The Baishi Ridge hike is a moderate 3 to 4-hour trek suitable for most fitness levels. While the initial path through coconut plantations is flat, the final ascent to the granite summit involves steep inclines and loose slate. Wear sturdy shoes to avoid slipping on gravel and start early to prevent heat exhaustion.
The trail kicks off by winding through these lush coconut plantations. It actually gave us Jardin or Salento vibes, reminiscent of those Colombian wax palms, though the trees here are a lot shorter. It basically feels like you’re strolling through the edges of local farms; it’s well-marked and easy enough if you’ve got a decent base level of fitness.
On our way up, we crossed paths with a few hikers heading down who’d camped overnight for the sunrise. For the most part, it’s just a gentle, shaded incline through the trees, but once you break out of the jungle section, things get a bit more vertical. The ground switches to loose slate, which gets pretty slippery, so you definitely have to watch your footing.
When you finally hit the summit, you’re rewarded with this incredible white granite lookout. The rocks are massive and give you these 360-degree views of the Hainan interior. Honestly, this hike was such a highlight for us. It felt so much more authentic and raw compared to the more polished, manicured parks back in Sanya. Essential Travel Tips for Sanya Hiking: Baishi Ridge Edition
To enjoy Baishi Ridge, arrive early to avoid the tropical heat or catch the sunrise. Bring at least two litres of water as there are no shops on the trail. Wear sturdy shoes for the loose slate sections and ensure your WeChat is loaded for the 15 CNY (2 USD) parking fee.
We finished the hike and linked back with our driver around 12:30 PM. After the two-hour drive back, we headed straight to the beach at Houhai Bay. We tracked down our local pineapple aunty using WeChat for some fresh fruit, enjoying the perfect post-hike reward.
