Hainan Hiking Trails: 4 Peaks to Explore Beyond the Beaches

May. 06, 2026 / Asia+ China+ Hainan

While many travellers associate Hainan strictly with the luxury resorts and crowded shorelines of Sanya, the true essence of the island resides within its tropical rainforests and rugged mountain ranges. This Hainan Hiking Guide explores vertical chain climbs and secret trails hidden behind coconut plantations, revealing a side of China less commonly seen by foreign travellers.

Jian Ridge, LIngshui

Jianling (Jian Ridge) is our favourite off-the-beaten-path adventure in the Lingshui region of Hainan. This trail is unmarked and completely lacks official signage, requiring travellers to navigate through a local village to find the start. The path winds through thick tropical greenery before opening up to a rocky summit with incredible views of the ocean.

Finding the way up Jianling is easily the biggest hurdle for most visitors. Consequently, chatting with the local villagers or having a high-resolution satellite map ready on a phone is highly recommended. Because the area hasn’t been commercialised, the trail offers a wonderfully quiet experience, though it definitely requires bringing plenty of water and snacks.

Difficulty LevelModerate

Seven Fairy Mountain, Baoting

Qixian Ridge, or Seven Fairy Mountain, is a iconic destination in Hainan. The trail features well-maintained stone steps through dense rainforest, leading to a dramatic final ascent. The summit requires scaling an 80-metre near-vertical rock face using heavy iron chains for safety. This climb demands a baseline level of upper-body strength. There’s a separate ticket booth at the start of the climb which includes access to gloves and a safety harness.

Difficulty LevelEasy
Estimated Time4-7 hours (return, depending on if you use the human conveyor belt)
Entry Fee50 CNY (7 USD)
Includes fee for the final ascent section

Baishi Ridge, Sanya

Baishi Ridge is another of our favourite hikes, and is located in Sanya (not to be confused with the other Baishi Ridge in Qionghai, Hainan). Unlike the more tourist-centric locations, this trail meanders through coconut plantations. The summit is characterised by granite boulders that provide unobstructed views of the surrounding valleys without the interference of crowds. This trail doesn’t have any official gates or ticket booths, requiring travellers to navigate through a local village to find the trailhead.

Wuzhi Mountain, Wuzhishan

Wuzhi Mountain (Wuzhishan) is the highest point on Hainan Island and is a slightly more serious full-day expedition. The first half of the trail is an easy walk through dense rainforest with lots of wooden steps. The second half is where it gets exciting. This rigorous climb involves navigating eight vertical steel ladders fixed directly to the cliffside. The combination of high humidity and extreme gradients makes it the a more demanding hiking trail compared to the others recommended in this blog.

Entry Fee50 CNY (7 USD)

Best Places to Stay for Hiking in Hainan

Selecting the right accommodation is vital for logistics and recovery. In Houhai Bay, boutique guesthouses and surf hostels allow for easy access to Jianling. In Baoting, hotels featuring natural hot springs are ideal for soothing muscles after tackling the steep steps of Qixian Ridge.

During our time in Hainan, we stayed in the following places for the hikes listed above:

  • Houhai Bay: Homecoming·Seascape Surfing Vacation (三亚归心海景冲浪度假店). This was one of our favourite stays due to having the ground floor room that lead directly to a pool and the beach.
  • Sanya: Yunshang·Manju Homestay (Sanya Bay Road). Essentially a serviced apartment, though the check in process was a little tricky, the accommodation was spectacular.
  • Wuzhishan: Floral Hotel · Harmony Pavilion Hotel. It is clean, modern, and has extra fluffy towels, exactly what you need after the climb.

Practical Logistics and Transport Findings

Remote trailheads in Hainan often lack reliable public transport. While ride-hailing apps like Didi function in urban centres, they are less reliable for return journeys from mountain entrances. Hiring a private driver for the day is the most efficient method for navigating between the peaks and accommodation bases.

Prices for a private driver typically range from 400-600 CNY (55-85 USD) per day, depending on the distance. Additionally, digital maps should be downloaded for offline use, as mobile reception can be intermittent in deep valleys. Carrying a minimum of three litres of water per person is essential for the longer tropical treks.

Which of these four Hainan peaks would you feel most challenged to climb: the vertical ladders of Wuzhishan or the iron chains of Qixian Ridge?
