Trail infrastructure: an honest note

The Maya Mountain trail is heavily built out with wooden boardwalks and staircases, which makes it accessible but does change the feel of the landscape. This isn’t a wilderness scramble. Some hikers find the extensive walkways take away from the scenery at Tianshan Tianchi. Ling’s group found the boardwalks genuinely necessary for footing at that altitude, a trade-off worth knowing about in advance. Where to Eat After: Aili Restaurant

Aili, a casual local restaurant near the Ürümqi hotel, serves hand-pulled noodles, lamb soup, and skewers for around 25 CNY (3.50 USD) per dish. Letting staff recommend dishes worked well after a day at Heavenly Lake China and delivered some of the best food of the trip.

The dish arrives as two separate parts: noodles on one side, meat and sauce (tomato, barbecued lamb with real smoky flavour, capsicum) on the other. Diners mix the two together by hand at the table. Refills are unlimited, so Ling ordered an extra one to soak up every bit of sauce. This was the standout dish of the trip so far.
• 缸子羊肉汤 (gāngzi yángròu tāng), lamb soup, 25 CNY (3.50 USD): Light and delicious, with yellow carrot (a first for Ling) and coriander. Nearly as good as the noodles.
• 大肉串 (dà ròu chuàn), meat skewers, 12 CNY (1.70 USD) per skewer: Coated in batter, good but the least memorable of the three. Notably, the lamb in Xinjiang doesn’t carry the strong “sheepy” smell sometimes found in lamb in Australia, likely a different breed or diet.

Afterwards, a street fruit vendor near Aili offered donut peaches, green peaches, and grapes; the vendor cut one open for Ling to try before purchase. The group also picked up jerky, eggs, and banana biscuits to stock up on hiking snacks for the days after Heavenly Lake China.
